We had been hearing good things about the Broadway Triangle district in the Oak Park neighborhood, so we grabbed a couple friends and stopped in to Oakhaus on a warm Sunday evening. Right away, we loved the modern take on a German Hofbrau Haus. As you step in, you notice the lightness of the room, convivial decor, and a long natural wood bar that was once an entire tree trunk.
Surrounded by a tasteful adornment of cuckoo clocks, vintage posters, and antique audio equipment (it sounds weird, but it works, trust us), we bellied up to the bar and placed our order. Our bartender host was helpful in his suggestions and guided us to a couple of large format German beers to start and an order of pork schnitzel and prime rib to compliment. The food was great and we had a good laugh about the lack of a steak knife since their place was so new! As we wrapped up our entrees we spotted a little something sweet to round out our meal at the counter.
When we had finished our dinner, we headed out to the large patio and found a game of cornhole (bean bag toss) to enjoy. We played for a while and soaked up the warm weather that evening with our friends.
Tip: On the first Friday of every month from May through December, shops in this neighborhood, including Oakhaus, stay open late and you can find sidewalk entertainment during their monthly celebration.
